The Four C’s of Diamonds

The four C’s of diamonds refer to the four key characteristics that determine a diamond’s value and quality: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

Cut refers to the angles and proportions of a diamond, which determine its ability to reflect light and sparkle. A well-cut diamond will have more fire and brilliance than a poorly-cut diamond.

Color refers to the absence or presence of color in a diamond. The color of a diamond is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). A colorless diamond is the most valuable, while a diamond with a strong yellow or brown color is less valuable.

Clarity refers to the presence or absence of inclusions and blemishes in a diamond. Inclusions are internal imperfections, while blemishes are external imperfections. The clarity of a diamond is graded on a scale from IF (internally flawless) to I3 (inclusions are visible to the naked eye). A diamond with few or no inclusions and blemishes is more valuable than a diamond with many inclusions and blemishes.

Carat weight refers to the weight of a diamond, which is a measure of its size. A diamond’s value increases with its carat weight, but two diamonds of the same carat weight can have different values depending on their cut, color, and clarity.
