Moissanite vs. Lab-Grown Diamond
Both are lab-created, both are far cheaper than natural diamond, and both get lumped together as "diamond alternatives" — but they're different materials with real trade-offs.
| Moissanite | Lab-Grown Diamond | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Silicon carbide | Carbon (identical to natural diamond) |
| Hardness (Mohs) | 9.25 | 10 (hardest known natural material) |
| Brilliance / fire | More fire (rainbow flashes); can look less "white" in direct sun to trained eyes | Closer to how a diamond is expected to look |
| Typical price vs. natural diamond | ~85–90% less | ~60–75% less |
| Resale value | Minimal | Minimal, but typically higher than moissanite |
| Certification | Brand-dependent (e.g., Charles & Colvard) | IGI / GIA, same as natural |
If your priority is maximum size and sparkle per dollar and you're comfortable with a slightly different look up close, moissanite is the better value. If you want something that reads unambiguously as "diamond" — to the wearer, to a jeweler, to a future appraiser — lab-grown diamond is the closer match to that expectation, at a real but smaller premium over moissanite.
The Diamond Finder can show moissanite and lab-grown side by side for the same spend.
